Stanford University Sarafan ChEM-H and the Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute, designed by Ennead, has been recognized by the Society for College and University Planning (SCUP) as part of the SCUP/AIA-CAE Excellence in Architecture Award.
Dedicated to the life sciences and human health, the facility brings together two interdisciplinary institutes – the Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute and Stanford Sarafan ChEM-H (Chemistry, Engineering and Medicine for Human Health) – in two interconnecting buildings. The research complex is strategically shared between the two Institutes, split into co-equal buildings connected by walkways and bridges. The two buildings surround an elliptical courtyard - a central communal space that forms the social heart of the two Institutes, which are now purposefully co-located and engaged in active dialogue. A common interior “living room” surrounds the ellipse, with a continuous exterior terrace on the second floor wrapping around the garden courtyard below.
